2. The thin crecent moon hangs over the Golden Gate Bridge as it sets in the west during a clear San Francisco evening. This moon has earthshine which occurs when the moon's surface is lit, not

by the sun directly, but by sunlight being reflected off the Earth and back to the moon. Earthshine can be seen during the moon's small crecent phases. Chronicle photo by

3. A full eclipse of the moon, like an evil pumpkin, tops San Francisco Transamerica Pyramid Wednesday evening 10/27. The partial phase of the eclipse started 6:14 p.m., just as the full moon is rising from the east bay hills. Totality began at 7:23 p.m., when the moon, blood- red was tucked completely within Earth's shadow. The next total eclipse in the Bay Area can be viewed in the wee hours of the night August 28, 2007. 10/27/04 San Francisco CA --
